Difficile de savoir lequel, du mariage ou de la folie, a la palme de l’enfermement… A l’époque de Feydeau, où ni l’union libre ni l’antipsychiatrie n’ont encore libéré corps et esprits des taxons médicaux et des contrats amoureux, la société bourgeoise verrouille les attachements et condamne la grande hystérie à l’enfer hydrophile et électrique de traitements inhumains : même volonté sans doute de mater les matrices… Les trois Lochois inventés par Feydeau arrivent de leur naïve province à Paris afin de s’y marier. Prenant un bureau de placement pour une agence matrimoniale, ils se retrouvent domestiques du docteur Saint-Galmier, propriétaire d’un asile psychiatrique dans lequel il finit par les faire enfermer en les prenant pour trois fous évadés. Jean-Louis Martinelli trouve dans cette pièce « une nouvelle occasion d’examiner comment fonctionnent les mécanismes de mise à la marge ». Transposant la pièce dans un contexte contemporain et choisissant de travailler avec ses comédiens en compagnie des résidents du CASH (le Centre d’Accueil et de soins Hospitaliers de Nanterre) pour interroger avec eux la question du déplacement et de l’étrangeté de la présence sur le plateau, le metteur en scène veut dégager le rythme et la fécondité comique de la pièce de « l’intérieur des rapports et des situations » qu’elle invente, afin de mettre en jeu « l’affolement » d’une intrigue qui prouve que le pathologique est davantage la menace que le révélateur de la norme.
