« FOURBE » : c’est écrit en grosses lettres, capitales même, blanches armoiries de l’infamie tatouées au dos noir d’un T-Shirt. Voici Scapin qui déboule, le pas cadencé par la colère et l’humeur toute ébouriffée. Ne sont-ils pas bien sots, ces fils dits de bonne famille, qui mènent leur vie selon les élans du cœur sans seulement imaginer demain ? Ne sont-ils pas bien fats, ces pères avaricieux qui s’entêtent à marier leurs enfants selon les intérêts de leur fortune sans même penser à la liberté des sentiments ? Si fait : tandis qu’Argante et Géronte s’en allaient en voyage et arrangeaient leur mariage, Octave, fils du premier, se liait avec la belle mais pauvre Hyacinte quand Léandre, fils du second, s’amourachait de l’égyptienne Zerbinette. Tout fringants et précieux hier, les deux blondins tremblent et pleurnichent aujourd’hui devant le courroux de leurs patriarches. Débrouillard en diable, jamais en reste d’une fine astuce ou d’un bon tour, Scapin entreprend, sous l’ardente supplique de deux malheureux rejetons, de faire céder les fers des desseins paternels. Il conçoit illico un écheveau d’intrigues merveilleusement emberlificotées, où se glissent fort à propos quelques coups de bâton vengeurs…
Efficace canaille
Jean Sclavis, depuis quinze ans fidèle collaborateur du Théâtre du Fust, retrouve en Scapin un rôle qu’il a maintes fois interprété au théâtre. Il l’aborde ici en « solo », ou plutôt entouré de huit marionnettes à hauteur de buste, imaginées par Emilie Valantin. Par la grâce d’un mécanisme de crosse à gâchette et d’un astucieux système de balancier et de contrepoids, il actionne et manipule tout son petit monde, prêtant sa voie travestie aux personnages et tirant les ficelles de la farce avec habile malice. Les poupées, joliment vêtues de redingotes taillées dans la pleine peau de blue-jeans, se prêtent au jeu et s’enhardissent à prendre vie. Fieffé pendard, roublard rebelle autant que rusé manipulateur, ce Scapin-là a la verve bien aiguisée contre les maîtres : il moque l’arrogance et les affèteries d’une jeunesse timorée – bien peu clairvoyante, tout comme il rosse les pingres barbons – bien peu perspicaces. Loin de se complaire dans le registre d’un comique rigolard, Jean Sclavis joue du va-et-vient entre incarnation et manipulation comme d’une mise en abyme du texte. La mise en scène tire de la farce tous les sucs acides. Si l’utilisation des marionnettes ralentit le rythme échevelé de l’intrigue, elle laisse justement des points de suspension qui ouvrent à toutes les projections d’imaginaires… et de réflexions.
