Faire vibrer toute la puissance allégorique de l’œuvre, de cette fable fantastique aux accents mythologiques dédiée « à la tragédie de la poésie au milieu de ce brutal monde moderne », est l’ambition que Lucie Berelowitsch a faite sienne. La réussite de cette appropriation tient d’abord à l’attention accordée à la multiplicité des possibles offerts par la pièce, dont l’argument de base tient de la mise en abîme théâtrale. Une troupe, réduite à sa plus simple expression, décimée, est à la recherche du lieu qui pourrait l’abriter pour répéter sa nouvelle création. Elle échoue à La Villa, île fantasmatique habitée par des marginaux ayant fait le choix de la poésie et de l’imagination contre celui de la nécessité, ces insulaires, que d’aucuns qualifieraient d’idéalistes, veulent croire sans attendre de voir. Au cœur du propos, la réflexion sur ce qu’est le théâtre, excédée de toutes parts, résonne dans ses déclinaisons éthiques et politiques, au-delà même du contexte effarant de la guerre actuelle qui ravage l’Ukraine. Que sommes-nous prêts à sacrifier à la peur et à ses représentations, à « ces géants de la montagne » qui en sont la forme poétique pirandellienne ?
Des tableaux d’une poésie folle
Lucie Berelowitsch entretient, depuis sa création, des liens privilégiés avec la formation née à l’initiative du directeur du Théâtre Dakh à Kiev, Vlad Troitskyi, il y a une dizaine d’années. Elle fait des comédiennes et musiciennes du groupe des Dakh Daughters les habitantes de La Villa imaginée par Pirandello. Et l’on ne saurait après les avoir vues et entendues en imaginer d’autres. Leur prestation d’une poésie folle répondant au fabuleux de l’inspiration pirandellienne est en tout point saisissante. Mêlant diverses sources d’inspiration dans cette veine du « freak-cabaret » qui leur est propre, leurs créations musicales et vocales inédites tiennent du sortilège. Sous le charme nous tiennent également les costumes baroques imaginés par Caroline Tavernier, comme l’unique décor mouvant des trois actes de la pièce, celui de cette Villa aux vrais faux airs de palais marqué par le passage du temps, conçu par le scénographe Hervé Cherblanc. Un bémol : l’exceptionnalité de la performance des Dakh Daughters mériterait que l’on trouve peut-être le moyen de rehausser celle des autres comédiens Jonathan Genet, Marina Keltchewsky, Thibault Lacroix, Baptiste Mayoraz et Roman Yasinovskyi, qui, pris dans un tel maelström, peinent à donner une vraie consistance à leur rôle.
