« Je crois avoir découvert une première fois les Exercices avant d’être musicien, peut-être à l’école… Et puis cela m’a repris bien plus tard : on venait de finir notre premier album sur Boby Lapointe et déjà l’expérience des jeux de mots et des contorsions du texte avait été très prolifique sur le plan musical. Cela donne immédiatement de bonnes idées pour faire des arrangements, comment disposer le lead, les accompagnements, les changements de tempo, etc. Avec les Exercices de style, ce fut carrément du caviar ! Il y a dans ce bouquin un véritable trésor pour compositeurs… Certains des exercices sont évidents à aborder musicalement et sonnent déjà comme des chansons mais d’autres ne sont pas évidents du tout ! « Prosthèses » par exemple dont l’idée consiste à ajouter une consonne à chaque mot : « zun bjour svers dmidi etc… ». Cela offre un choix de possibilités presque infinies en version "musicale" ! Pour le disque, le principe de l’exercice de style fut évident. Dans le studio d’enregistrement, tout est possible.

On s’est retrouvé comme dans un laboratoire sonore et on a eu envie de faire une version acoustique, une version plus électro, d’avoir un son rock, ou de encore baigner les voix dans des réverbérations luxuriantes ou au contraire les laisser « sèches », de rajouter quelques effets ou tout faire d’un trait en mono avec un micro au centre du groupe, etc. Dans tous les cas, on retrouvait la stratégie des exercices de styles : faire des versions différentes d’un même thème. Cela nous ramène aux origines de la musique "savante" : thèmes et variations. C’est pour cette raison qu’il y a une version reggae, une version rock, une version « robots », une version « chanson pour enfant »… Et même un opéra miniature dans la version concert ! »
