Entre concerto et symphonie, la musique française parfois balance. C’est le cas de Tout un monde lointain, concerto pour violoncelle auquel Dutilleux a donné un titre emprunté à un vers de La chevelure de Baudelaire. Créée par Rostropovitch en 1970, l’œuvre déploie des irisations de timbres, poétiques et oniriques, dans lesquelles ondoie le chant du violoncelle, complice plutôt que rival de l’orchestre, à rebours des stéréotypes de la virtuosité concertante. Révélation Radio-Canada 2019-2020, Cameron Crozman, que l’on retrouve parfois avec l’Ensemble Intercontemporain et Court-Circuit, défendra ce qui est désormais un classique du répertoire des violoncellistes. Quant à la Symphonie n°3 en ut mineur op. 78 que Saint-Saëns avait écrite en hommage à Liszt, elle affirme une facture concertante avec l’orgue de plus en plus marquée au fil de la partition, jusqu’au Maestoso final irradiant à plein jeux.
