Génie des situations et remarquable capacité truculente à croquer des personnages à hurler de rire : Daniel Call est de cette génération marquée en Allemagne par le désarroi de la réunification. Les deux couples qui s’affrontent dans Les Jardins de l’horreur, caricaturaux et odieux, sont impayables de drôlerie. Sonni et Sigi, urbains venus trouver la paix et l’authenticité verdoyante à la campagne, s’installent à côté de chez Friedo et Frieda, rustiques au grand cœur mais aux mœurs un peu envahissantes. Sonni voit avec dégoût la marmaille et les cadeaux de mauvais goût de sa trop dévouée belle-sœur phagocyter son lebensraum zen et raffiné, et finit par passer à l’attaque pour mieux résister à l’invasion. Les jardins mitoyens se transforment bientôt en champ de bataille et les sacs de sable remplacent les nains en terre cuite ! Myrto Reiss propose une mise en scène enlevée, dynamique et remarquablement réglée de ce désastre frontalier servi par quatre comédiens à la pêche formidable. L’ensemble compose un spectacle franchement hilarant et en même temps sacrément finaud dans la critique politique et morale qui transparaît derrière la farce.
