La tradition dit que c’est suite à une représentation d’Henry IV que la reine Elisabeth Ière d’Angleterre aurait émis le souhait de voir le personnage de Sir John Falstaff tomber amoureux. Soucieux de satisfaire la souveraine, c’est pour elle que William Shakespeare aurait décidé de créer une seconde pièce faisant intervenir ce bon vivant menteur et débauché. L’auteur donna ainsi naissance aux Joyeuses Commères de Windsor, une comédie aux forts accents de farce au sein de laquelle le grand et gros seigneur (interprété, aujourd’hui, par Bruno Raffaelli) tente de séduire, simultanément, deux bourgeoises fortunées (Catherine Sauval et Cécile Brune). S’apercevant de la duplicité de Falstaff, les deux amies décident de se jouer de cet homme maladroit, planifiant un stratagème visant à le ridiculiser publiquement. Pour l’entrée au répertoire de la Comédie-Française de ces Joyeuses Commères, le metteur en scène Andrés Lima a élaboré une représentation ambitieuse et pleine d’entrain. Une représentation pourtant inégale, qu’il explique avoir conçue à partir des acteurs et de leur jeu.
De l’univers de Bruegel l’Ancien à celui de Jérôme Bosch : une comédie picturale
Si les Comédiens Français sont en effet placés au centre de cette mise en scène, c’est l’univers esthétique composé par la scénographie de Beatriz San Juan, les costumes de Renato Bianchi, les lumières de Dominique Borrini et les maquillages de Cécile Kretschmar qui représentent le véritable point fort de ce spectacle. On se croirait, par moments, devant tel tableau de Bruegel l’Ancien, ou tel autre de Jérôme Bosch. A l’intérieur de cette très belle atmosphère de trognes, de chahut et de singeries, de refrains et de risées, les interprètes commencent par convaincre. Ainsi, au travers de codes de jeu typés mais justes, truculents mais tenus, ils parviennent tout d’abord à incarner avec beaucoup de réussite les protagonistes de cette société provinciale (Catherine Hiegel, en Madame Pétule, est remarquable). Les énergies des comédiens circulent, se répondent, formant alors une troupe joyeuse et virtuose. Mais peu à peu, ce souffle commence à s’infléchir, laissant la place à des excès de cabotinage, à des figures perdant en profondeur et même, parfois, en vérité. Quel dommage. Car, au final, la représentation d’Andrés Lima n’aura pas réussi à donner la pleine mesure d’une humanité qui — derrière Falstaff et les personnages hauts en couleur qui l’entourent — exprime dans Les Commères de Windsor certaines de ses plus piquantes ambivalences.
