Tonino et Zanetto, jumeaux séparés à la naissance et élevés, l’un dans la brillante Venise, l’autre dans la campagne de Bergame, se retrouvent par hasard à Vérone. Le jeune raffiné et le rustre idiot ne se connaissent pas mais se ressemblent tellement que quiproquos et embrouillaminis farfelus vont s’enchaîner, provoquant des rires en cascade, jusqu’à ce que la comédie du malentendu tourne au drame. Comme toujours les benêts, Zanetto est un peu trop naïf pour n’être pas victime de l’odieux tartuffe que campe avec une belle gravité Olivier Sitruk. Maxime d’Aboville interprète le double rôle des jumeaux avec un talent éblouissant. S’il rend Tonino sympathique en interprétant avec maestria sa bravoure et son panache, il offre surtout à Zanetto une profondeur, une humanité, une gentillesse qui le fait véritable gentilhomme. Le rire qu’il fait naître avec ce rôle est mâtiné de tendresse : il parvient avec génie à rendre aimable le rustaud. La mise en scène de Jean-Louis Benoit est extrêmement fluide et le décor de Jean Hass sert à merveille les bondissements et gambades de tout ce petit monde en plein désarroi. La sympathie pointe en permanence sous le comique et l’ensemble compose un très beau spectacle.
