Le décor conçu par Caroline Mexme s’inspire de l’univers des années folles et de la façade du Cotton Club : une enseigne lumineuse évoque un cabaret et affiche le lieu de l’intrigue – Vérone. C’est là que se retrouvent Tonino et Zanetto, deux jumeaux séparés à la naissance et élevés pour l’un dans la brillante Venise, pour l’autre dans la campagne de Bergame. Le jeune raffiné et le rustre idiot sont emportés dans un « tourbillon de situations incongrues tissant une folle journée sur fond de mariage arrangé, bijoux volés et fiole de poison ». « Nous présenterons un travail où la direction d’acteur sera axée sur un jeu très ciselé et précis », dit le metteur en scène Anthony Magnier, spécialiste du genre de la commedia dell’arte, qu’il installe dans la folie et la liberté des années 20 pour en exacerber l’extravagance et la virtuosité.
