Plus familier des festivals de Marciac, La Roque d’Anthéron ou Vienne, le pianiste et compositeur Antoine Hervé part pour la première fois à la conquête du public d’Avignon. L’ex-wonderboy du jazz français des années 80, au cours desquelles il prend, à moins de 30 ans, les commandes de l’ONJ et casse la baraque en mettant à ses pieds la presse, le public et le Gotha du jazz international (Quincy Jones et Gil Evans en tête), est devenu aujourd’hui un musicien à la fois assagi mais toujours effervescent. Son nouveau grand projet est… pédagogique, familial et convivial : « Je suis parti du constat que le jazz est globalement méconnu. Or, j’avais besoin de faire découvrir aux gens ce qui me passionne au quotidien. J’ai ainsi imaginé ces « Leçons de jazz », qui, en un peu plus d’une heure, font le portrait de grands créateurs du jazz.
Désacraliser les géants du jazz
Je rappelle le contexte historique, raconte des anecdotes et donne quelques éléments d’analyse musicale. L’idée est de désacraliser ces grands interprètes. C’est pour cela que je décris leurs faiblesses, leurs contradictions. Ces musiciens sont à la portée de tous. » explique Antoine Hervé. Chaque jour du festival, un géant de l’Histoire du Jazz sera à l’honneur, avec à l’affiche une belle palette de pianistes : Oscar Peterson, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck et Keith Jarrett, mais aussi un programme dédié au Blues et au Boogie. « Ce qui me fait plaisir, c’est lorsque les gens sortent en disant qu’ils ont la sensation de mieux comprendre la musique, d’être plus intelligents, et d’avoir envie de réécouter le musicien dont ils viennent de (re)découvrir la musique » explique Antoine Hervé.
