Quand, après avoir longtemps tâté de la mélodie, Francis Poulenc se décida, vers la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, à se lancer dans la composition d’un opéra, le nom d’Apollinaire s’imposa à son esprit. Celui dont il avait maintes fois mis en musique la poésie – au même titre que Cocteau, Éluard, Aragon, Max Jacob – lui fournissait post-mortem un sujet d’opéra-bouffe insolite avec ses Mamelles de Tirésias, « drame surréaliste en deux actes et un prologue », publié en 1917. La partition de Poulenc, qui n’eut pas à retoucher le livret, est un joyeux pêle-mêle où se bousculent les références, emprunts et pastiches musicaux, lorgnant tantôt vers Rossini, tantôt vers la polka. Il y a, dans cette ironie musicale accompagnant un texte qui n’en recèle pas moins, quelque chose qui indubitablement évoque l’ombre de Satie. Mélange des genres, mélange des sexes aussi pour cette histoire où la femme, par féminisme, se sépare de ses mamelles et où l’homme procrée seul plus de quarante mille enfants en un jour (l’exagération du nombre est bien d’Apollinaire : que l’on pense aux Onze mille verges !). Avec en prélude le Bœuf sur le toit de Milhaud et un fox-trot de Chostakovitch, cette nouvelle production de l’Opéra de Lyon et de l’Opéra Comique est confiée à Macha Makeïeff, qui promet « une soirée très Dada entre cirque et music-hall déglingué. On est tout à fait transgenre du sol au plafond et la vie amoureuse est un collage joyeusement inquiétant ».
