Si dès l’adolescence, il a monté un groupe de rap dans son garage avec trois copains de lycée, c’est surtout sa rencontre avec le slam qui est aujourd’hui au cœur de son travail. Alors qu’il a remporté l’an dernier le 1er prix par équipe et en individuel du Grand Slam national de Paris, il livre dans ses Monologues d’un code-barres un spectacle au carrefour du slam, de la poésie et de la musique. Concevant ses textes comme des « objets sonores » destinés à être dits et performés, il incarne un personnage qui ne cesse de rêver au train qu’il a manqué vingt ans auparavant. Sur un quai de gare fictif, voilà cet homme qui sort d’un sac de sport de vieux objets, prétextes à raconter leur histoire ou plutôt celles des personnes qu’il a pu croiser : ici un homme qui imagine le casse d’un casino d’une ville thermale pour reproduire un film qu’il a vu la veille à la télé, là un vétéran de guerre qui voit des fantômes. A travers leurs solitudes, leurs folies nocturnes, leurs hallucinations et leurs raisonnements tirés jusqu’à l’absurde, Jérôme Pinel décrit un monde de supermarchés aussi banal que dérisoire.
