La compagnie du Théâtre de l’Etreinte relève le défi : porter à la scène une descente effarante dans les bas-fonds du Paris du XIXe siècle, un monde de dangers, de peurs et de violences, peuplé des voix des démunis et des malheureux. Publié sous forme de feuilletons dans Le Journal des Débats en 1842 et 1843, le roman fleuve rédigé par Eugène Sue a véritablement passionné une multitude de lecteurs. Le héros Rodolphe, Prince redresseur de torts grimé en ouvrier, s’immisce dans les entrailles de la ville, où il rencontre la fragile Fleur-de-Marie, dite la Goualeuse, le Chourineur… « Adapter Les Mystères de Paris ressemble à une excursion dans le sale, le sombre et le sang, le tout mêlé d’une tendre envie de justice », souligne Charlotte Escamez, auteure de l’adaptation du roman, complice habituelle de la compagnie fondée par William Mesguich. Le metteur en scène dresse un tableau foisonnant et flamboyant de ce Paris tentaculaire où gravitent des personnages hors normes, et un Monsieur Loyal omniscient.
