L’art de Genet se caractérise par le principe de la mise en abyme, un rituel cérémonial du théâtre dans le théâtre. Une clownerie à l’occasion de laquelle treize comédiens réunis dans un lieu clandestin jouent une tragédie classique, le Meurtre de la Blanche qui nécessite le partage de la compagnie en deux groupes. D’un côté, la Cour blanche, masquée et spectatrice des Nègres comédiens. De l’autre, ces mêmes Nègres comédiens relatent un crime qui les fera juger et condamner par la Cour. S’ensuit un combat entre les Mères des deux entités jusqu’à l’exécution des masques blancs. Or, Genet aime confondre la réalité et la fiction : hors scène, un tribunal noir juge un traître dont l’exécution est simultanée à celle des masques blancs, d’où la révolte. Au drame joué sur la scène répond son reflet en coulisses. Les comédiens jouent, puis oublient leur rôle, saisis par la force d’un réel qui les dépasse. Voilà un simulacre de vengeance, un théâtre truqué qui ignore les cadavres. Déguisements, jeux de miroir, les identités se perdent dans un délire songeur.
