C’est en 1959 que Roger Blin donna la création des Nègres de Jean Genet, une pièce sur le racisme de tous les jours entre Blancs et Noirs, thème que l’auteur, à l’écoute des différences, prend particulièrement à cœur. L’étrangeté de la pièce tient à la confusion affichée de la dramaturgie. Des acteurs noirs investissent le plateau en se séparant en deux groupes. D’un côté, des hommes masqués représentent la Cour des Blancs avec la Reine, le Valet, le Juge, le Missionnaire et le Gouverneur, des symboles institutionnels. De l’autre, les acteurs restants jouent sur la scène à être des comédiens noirs, ces Nègres qui représentent Le Meurtre de la Blanche, le récit d’un crime que la Cour doit juger et condamner. Aux masques distingués des Noirs déguisés font face des Nègres qui feignent une sauvagerie spectaculaire sous la direction de leur metteur en scène Archibald, un maître à penser passionné (belle conviction de Jean-Baptiste Anoumon) : « Nous sommes ce qu’on veut que nous soyons, nous le serons donc jusqu’au bout absurdement. » Paradoxalement, la Cour blanche d’apparat doit se méfier : elle porte le masque qui, selon le bréviaire de Genet, est signe du mensonge, de la fausseté et de l’hypocrisie alors que les « performers » bruts des Nègres jouent authentiquement à être ce qu’ils sont, frontalement.
Un vrai talent de mise en gloire pailletée des figures poétiques
Mais la complexité des fils du drame n’est pas encore défaite : hors de l’imaginaire du plateau, un autre tribunal noir siège sur une place de la ville pour juger un traître à la Révolution. Et à l’exécution du traître dans la rue, répond, grâce à une savante mise en abyme, la mise à mort de la Cour masquée ; elle s’est trop risquée à jouer les Blancs. L’écoute de la pièce s’amuse des trois niveaux qui s’enchevêtrent bon gré mal gré, une partie relativement ardue pour le spectateur. Cristèle Alves Meira n’a pas été effrayée par la difficulté et elle a eu presque raison. Le cérémonial est magnifique, de même l’art du rite et du sacré, des lumières et des éclats. Ses comédiens viennent de tous continents noirs et blancs. Un vrai talent de mise « en gloire » pailletée des figures poétiques de Genet dans le respect des corps et des voix des acteurs, certains faillibles parfois dans la diction, présents intensément. Catafalque, robes du soir, une Mère Afrique poupée de tulle descend des cintres et accouche de marionnettes, une élégante « architecture de vide et de mots » qui exige aussi davantage d’envolées.
