Un campement de ferblantiers, au détour d’une route de village, en Irlande. Sarah Casey, une jeune bohémienne, est bien déterminée à épouser secrètement le rétameur Michael Byrne. La chose est conclue à la tombée de la nuit mais, le lendemain matin, la jeune mariée devra faire face à l’hostilité de sa belle-mère. Pour mettre en scène la pièce de John Millington Synge, Marjorie Nakache a fait appel à la danse flamenca, à l’apport de la musique (jouée en direct sur le plateau) et à l’usage de marionnettes. « Le récit, ses éclats, son faste et sa langue aventureuse nous ont enthousiasmés davantage que la restitution [folklorique] d’un paysage authentique », déclare-t-elle. Travaillant ainsi à rendre « cette pièce si irlandaise »universelle, la directrice artistique du Studio Théâtre de Stains a cherché à ce que « chaque anecdote, chaque lieu, chaque être transcende ses limites pour atteindre à la vérité intemporelle et sans frontière du mythe ».
