En entomologiste de la condition humaine, Honoré de Balzac a dressé un portrait encyclopédique des mœurs de son temps, en décrivant les ambitions de toutes les catégories sociales dans le contexte du capitalisme naissant. Les traits et les caractères de ses personnages se retrouvent parmi les membres de La Fleur, qui, « comme les dandys et les courtisanes du XIXème siècle, forment une sorte d’aristocratie d’en bas ». Provinciaux montés à la capitale ou étrangers « prêts à traverser des continents pour rejoindre les métropoles occidentales et y percer », ils y trouvent « une société où l’ascension sociale n’est pas censée fonctionner pour tous ». « Les membres de La Fleur ne s’accommodent pas de ces limitations, mais endossent des rôles et changent de statut selon le principe « Détermine toi-même qui tu veux être ». Cela exige des stratégies de métamorphose et de dépassement, qui sont appliquées non seulement sur scène, mais aussi dans la vie. »
