Pendant près de deux mois, ce festival foisonnant, exigeant et convivial, au cœur de l’emblématique colline de Fourvière, propose près de quarante spectacles et cent représentations, dans six lieux différents. La programmation théâtre et musique, particulièrement riche, impressionne par la qualité et le nombre des artistes invités. En danse, un événement domine : la création conjointe de Carolyn Carlson et Bartabas de We were Horses, sur la musique de Philip Glass. Douze cavaliers et seize danseurs y confrontent leurs énergies (voir article danse dans ce numéro). En musique les jeunes tels Cristina Branco et Antonio Zambujo pour le fado, Yaël Naïm, la jeune Danoise Agnès Obel, côtoient les mythes : Bryan Ferry, Lou Reed, Paolo Conte, Danyel Waro, Sting… Rien que ça ! A signaler aussi l’appropriation de Rain Dogs revisited de Tom Waits par un collectif d’artistes sous la direction musicale de David Coulter, la première française Carmina Burana par les catalans de La Fura Dels Baus, Le Condamné à mort de Genet avec Jeanne Moreau et Etienne Daho, Anaesthesia de Nicola Hümpel, hommage insolent à Haendel. Sans oublier le Cirque Romanès.
« Rire presque organique »
En théâtre plusieurs créations co-produites par le Festival convoquent des artistes majeurs. I am the Wind de Jon Fosse (visible aussi cet été au Festival d’Avignon), dans la traduction anglaise de Simon Stephens et la mise en scène de Patrice Chéreau, réunit deux jeunes acteurs, Tom Brooke et Jack Laskey, pour un voyage entre deux êtres sur un bateau au milieu de la mer. Serge Valletti, en créant Toutaristophane – Lisette d’après Lysistrata et Reviennent les lucioles! d’après Les Grenouilles -, dans une mise en espace de Georges Lavaudant, vise à « rendre palpable pour le public le rire presque organique qu’Aristophane souhaitait ». Avec douze acteurs béninois, Emmanuel Daumas met en scène Les Nègres de Genet, « une clownerie sur une des plus grandes barbaries de l’histoire du monde : le rapport entre les Noirs et les Blancs ». Krystian Lupa crée La Salle d’attente, librement adapté de Catégorie 3.1 de Lars Norén, avec de très jeunes comédiens francophones, qui ont ici la chance de travailler avec un sorcier de la scène qui porte l’art de l’acteur à des sommets… Magistral !
