« Mais voici le jour… »… C’est ainsi que Schéhérazade achevait son récit, quand les lueurs de l’aurore brûlaient les ténèbres et menaçaient de rompre sa vie, suspendue au fil des mots… Et c’est ainsi que durant mille et une nuits, elle retint dans l’entrelacs du récit le coup fatal du Sultan Shahryar, qui, en représailles de l’infidélité d’une première épouse, avait décidé de faire exécuter chaque matin la femme qu’il avait épousée la veille. Puisant souvent dans la littérature la sève de sa danse, Angelin Preljocaj s’inspire aujourd’hui de ces contes légendaires. « Ce qui est passionnant dans les Mille et Une Nuits, c’est le dispositif mis en place à travers la figure de Shéhérazade qui, par le verbe, la culture et l’intelligence, se dresse comme un rempart à la barbarie et nous questionne sur la place de la femme dans nos sociétés. » souligne le chorégraphe. « Il y a dans ces contes des aspects très sensuels, que j’aimerais redéployer dans la danse. » Entouré d’Azzedine Alaïa pour les costumes, de Natacha Atlas et Samy Bishai pour la musique, il signe une pièce pour 18 danseurs où le fantasme court dans l’ombre des corps.
