Deux femmes, Camarade Constance et Belle Espérance, fuient les hommes, gangrenés par la corruption, manipulés par les démagogues et saignés à blanc par les impôts. Elles rejoignent les oiseaux et poussent La Huppe à persuader le peuple des volatiles de fonder une cité entre terre et ciel, rendant ainsi à la gent ailée le pouvoir confisqué par les dieux (« XXL des stratosphères » chez Arias revisitant Aristophane) en interrompant non plus la circulation des fumets sacrificiels, comme dans la farce initiale, mais l’importation des viandes hachées. La guerre est déclarée avec les Olympiens et l’utopie civile tourne en eau de boudin d’autant que les créateurs de Coucou-les-Nuées ne parviennent pas à gérer les demandes d’asile et l’affluence migratoire. Alfredo Arias installe le théâtre dans le théâtre et la place Colette sur la scène de la salle Richelieu, transforme les oiseaux en « comédienzeaux », confiant au talent de Françoise Tournafond le soin d’inventer pour chaque personnage un costume rappelant une grande figure de l’histoire dramatique (moineau Scapin, corbeau Harpagon, etc.).
Un spectacle triste et lourd
A force de glissements, de transformations et de mises en abyme, à force de théâtre dans le théâtre et de référence dans la référence, l’ensemble compose un galimatias dramaturgique où l’on peine un peu à suivre l’intrigue, pourtant mince chez Aristophane. Le spectacle est composé de tableaux successifs, chorégraphiquement poussifs et musicalement sirupeux. Comparaison n’est pas raison et la place Colette n’est pas Broadway, mais même les comédies musicales du commerce actuel semblent des merveilles d’inventivité et de maîtrise vocale en comparaison de celle-ci qui flirte davantage avec la tragédie qu’avec la farce légère et enlevée. Embarqués dans cette galère, les comédiens du Français font tout ce qu’ils peuvent mais leurs effets tournent à l’afféterie minaudière et l’ensemble, laborieux et triste, prouve que la plume n’est pas forcément gage de légèreté… Alfredo Arias use de la métaphore théâtrale pour interroger la capacité utopique de cet art dont il est un des créateurs les plus joyeusement insolents et iconoclastes : l’essai est raté et Aristophane entre au répertoire par une toute petite porte…
