Dans le corpus que Bach a composé pour jalonner l’année liturgique se détachent des quelque 250 cantates certaines formes plus amples pour marquer les moments les plus saillants de la geste christique. Aux côtés des monuments que sont les Passions, on recense trois Oratorios. Si celui de Noël se présente comme un cycle de six cantates, les deux consacrés à Pâques et à l’Ascension sont chacun constitués de onze numéros. Le premier, donné en 1725 par Bach à Saint-Thomas, à Leipzig, deux jours après la Passion selon Saint-Jean, se distingue par une brillante Sinfonia d’ouverture, à la mesure de la célébration du miracle de la Résurrection. Le second, écrit dix ans plus tard, plus ramassé, prend un tour plus dramatique, avec un aria pour alto «Ach, bleibe doch, mein liebstes Leben», que Bach réutilisera comme Agnus Dei dans la Messe en si. La puissance théâtrale de ces deux mini-opéras religieux d’un maître qui n’en composa aucun de profane sera mise en valeur par le contre-ténor Damien Guillon et son ensemble Le Banquet Céleste, avec le renfort du Chœur de chambre Mélisme(s).
