« Dur labeur ! Tout est noir, tout est froid ; rien ne luit. » : le travailleur de la mer affronte les éléments pour rapporter dans ses filets la maigre pêche qui nourrira les cinq petits sur lesquels Jeannie veille en l’attendant. Mais dans la cabane voisine, une autre mère est morte, laissant deux orphelins. La pauvreté ne rend pas forcément méchant, et contre tous ceux qui, encore aujourd’hui, excusent la bêtise des cœurs secs au prétexte de leur maigre bourse, Hugo chante, dans le poème Les Pauvres Gens, l’héroïsme ordinaire des partageurs de peu et leur bonté sans calcul. Dur labeur également que la réalisation du défi que relèvent Denis Guénoun et les régisseurs et chefs machinistes de son équipe : faire du théâtre sans acteurs ! Denis Guénoun espère « montrer, à l’occasion de ce spectacle, l’acte technique comme procédé de transfiguration par des opérations qui ne sont pas magiques, mais bien concrètes ». Le savoir technique, élément essentiel au chatoiement de tout spectacle, a souvent la discrétion de l’écrin : il s’agit cette fois de montrer comment il peut rejoindre la force suggestive du verbe en transfigurant le réel par la maîtrise de la machinerie théâtrale.
