Dans l’Angleterre des années 30, un groupe de mineurs veut s’inscrire à des cours du soir en économie. Ils sont finalement amenés à suivre des cours d’histoire de l’art et découvrent un monde dont il ignorait tout. Abandonnant la théorie pour la pratique, ils se révèlent doués de vocation et de talent au point qu’une riche collectionneuse remarque leurs travaux. Péripéties cocasses dans cette initiation drôle et émouvante, portraits sensibles et questionnement sous-jacent fin et nuancé sur les pouvoirs libérateurs et épanouissants de l’art : Lee Hall reprend dans cette pièce le thème du film Billy Elliot dont il a écrit le scénario, film dans lequel le fils d’un mineur découvrait la danse. Montée pour la première fois en français avec une distribution franco-suisse, Les Peintres au charbon campe des héros populaires, devenus rares dans le théâtre contemporain, comme le remarque Marion Bierry qui trouve chez Lee Hall le mouvement de sa mise en scène, « celui de quelqu’un qui veut se mettre debout ».
