L’Angleterre des mines dans les années 30 correspond à une époque faste de construction économique et sociale. En France, le Front populaire rend sa dignité aux travailleurs qui accèdent à la semaine des 40h et aux congés payés. Un temps où les mots valorisants de « nationalisation » et d’« ouvrier » favorisaient l’émergence des associations pour l’éducation populaire. Dans l’esprit du cinéma social anglais de Ken Loach et consorts, Lee Hall – le scénariste de Billy Eliott – est l’auteur des Peintres au charbon que monte Marion Bierry. Ils sont cinq ouvriers – trois travaillent à la mine, un quatrième, ancien gazé, est mécanicien dentiste, et le cinquième, plus jeune, est chômeur. Tous viennent au cours d’éducation artistique un peu par hasard, en se pliant à ce jeu inhabituel d’exigence et d’ouverture avec une sincérité à la fois critique et bon enfant. Les mineurs se découvrent eux-mêmes et certains s’accomplissent sous l’égide de leur professeur de sensibilisation artistique, un maître attentif à la « différence » et respectueux de l’expérience ouvrière de ses élèves. Une femme libre et autonome pose pour les apprentis peintres tandis qu’une autre, richissime protectrice, achète les toiles.
Un paradis perdu de pureté et d’innocence
Le défi philosophique des Peintres au charbon est audacieux quand il consiste en ce frottement improbable entre l’art et sa nécessité pour ceux qui ne le fréquentent pas. Si les mineurs se prêtent au jeu de la création esthétique, ils le font sciemment par solidarité « pour toutes ces vies dans l’ombre, qui n’ont jamais eu une chance de s’exprimer… pour ces milliers de p’tit gars de la mine qui n’ont pas reçu d’éducation… pour toutes ces vies non enregistrées…Toute cette créativité étouffée. » Le propos simpliste de Lee Hall reste didactique à travers des répliques qui évoquent l’exploitation des hommes et la liberté, comme si ces temps-là positifs d’interrogation sociale et humaine évoquaient un paradis perdu de pureté et d’innocence. Une vérité certes, mais l’intrigue, bourrée de bons sentiments, procède d’une écriture compassionnelle. La mise en scène de Marion Bierry, incisive et efficace, donne du volume et du souffle à la comédie sociale. Les acteurs ont du cœur et du coffre : Bernard Ballet, Robert Bouvier, Thomas Cousseau, Jacques Michel, Carine Martin, Odile Roire, Erice Verdin et Arthur Vlad. Un tableau émouvant malgré son discours naïf.
