C’est en 1996, au Maillon de Strasbourg, que Chantal Morel a pour la première fois porté un texte de Dostoïevski sur un plateau. Après avoir été l’objet d’une révélation nocturne (« dans un rêve, confesse-t-elle, quelqu’un me conseillait de lire Dostoïevski »), la metteure en scène s’est plongée dans l’œuvre de l’écrivain russe, estimant depuis n’avoir jamais aussi bien entendu la question de la dignité humaine. Aujourd’hui, Chantal Morel revient à cet auteur par le biais d’un spectacle moins intimiste que ceux qu’elle a créés ces dernières années au Petit 38 (théâtre grenoblois de 89 m2). Œuvre ample nécessitant la présence sur scène de douze comédiens, Les Possédés présentent, dans la Russie provinciale de la fin du XIXème siècle, « une pléiade de personnages, de “possédés” saisis dans des événements troubles, à la recherche de leur être profond, entre le bien et le mal ». Habitée d’un désir impérieux de vérité, c’est l’esprit libre d’intentions que Chantal Morel souhaite aborder ce texte. « Je n’attends rien, explique-t-elle, je sais que cela va arriver. L’œuvre de Dostoïevski est là. Ce n’est pas elle qui est à adapter, c’est nous-mêmes qui devons nous préparer. Pourquoi ? Pour nous présenter au théâtre lavés des conventions qui régulent nos comportements et nos rapports à notre art, à notre métier. »
