Un spectacle-fleuve pour un roman foisonnant, mouvementé, impétueux. Cette version scénique des Possédés signe une forme de virage dans la carrière de Chantal Morel. Après avoir dirigé à Grenoble, de 1996 à 2007, un lieu de 89 m2 (Le Petit 38, qu’elle a elle même créé, puis fermé), la metteure en scène iséroise revient à un théâtre plus volumineux, moins contenu : un théâtre qui « déborde », un théâtre « submergé par la vie », comme l’indique Marie Lamachère (comédienne et dramaturge du spectacle). Un théâtre à travers lequel — après Le Sous-sol, La Douce, Crime et Châtiment — Chantal Morel continue d’explorer une œuvre avec laquelle elle avoue entretenir un rapport d’entente profonde et de nécessité. Sur la grande scène des Amandiers de Nanterre, l’ancienne codirectrice du Centre dramatique national des Alpes (fonction qu’elle quitta au bout d’un an d’exercice, en 1989, pour prendre ses distances avec l’institution), retrace de manière consciencieuse et narrative l’entrecroisement de destinées qui compose le roman de Fedor Dostoïevski. Des destinées sombres et complexes qui avancent, qui s’opposent, qui s’enflamment autour des questions de l’existence de dieu, de la responsabilité et de l’émancipation de l’homme, du sens de la vie.

La représentation conçue par Chantal Morel donne corps à ces lignes dramaturgiques de façon fragmentaire et inégale. Naviguant entre gros plans et plans larges, teintes mordorées, découpes de lumière et atmosphères de la plus profonde obscurité, cette création offre toutes sortes de perspectives et suscite des impressions mêlées. Tout d’abord, le sentiment d’assister à une proposition d’une grande honnêteté, mais qui aurait gagné à dessiner davantage d’ellipses, à voir certaines de ses scènes et de ses interprètes gagner en épaisseur, en intériorité. D’autres moments, à l’inverse, offrent des perspectives plus singulières, d’une opacité ou d’une sensibilité troublantes. Des perspectives à l’occasion desquelles l’espace du théâtre semble s’ouvrir pour laisser percer une intensité qui manque à d’autres parties de la représentation. S’illustrant dans un de ces moments de réussite, la comédienne Servane Ducorps confère au désespoir de Lisavéta Drozdov une authenticité saisissante. C’est tout le champ de l’âme humaine qui investit alors la scène. Tous la profondeur, tous les remous intérieurs d’un être coincé entre les attentes de sa conscience et les heurts de son existence.
