De la naissance à la mort, nous sommes régis par des principes et des cérémonials : déclaration de naissance, fiançailles, mariage, deuil…. Ces règles du savoir-vivre, codifiées dans un manuel du XIXe siècle par la baronne Staffe, Jean-Luc Lagarce en a fait une pièce où l’ironie le dispute au cynisme. Pour Agnès Régolo, « Lagarce y révèle la cruauté et la cupidité d’une société sûre de la supériorité de ses codes. Le regard qu’il pose sur les usages désuets de la société bourgeoise du siècle dernier nous permet d’évaluer la pression de nos propres usages sociaux contemporains, d’entrevoir la violence que peuvent prendre aujourd’hui les nouvelles formes de règles qui codifient l’intimité. » Pour faire écho à la musicalité de la langue de Lagarce, la metteuse en scène a choisi de jouer avec un batteur et un violoncelliste, qui ont composé eux-mêmes une musique faisant partie intégrante du spectacle. Le texte en ressort encore plus libre et décalé, dénonçant les convenances dans une joyeuse légèreté qui rappelle par certains égards la démarche des surréalistes.
