C’est une oeuvre qui met en présence un auteur et un metteur en scène qui ont su être novateurs, exigeants, et désireux de partager leur art. Gabriel Garran a créé en 1969 au théâtre de la Commune d’Aubervilliers Off Limits, dernière oeuvre montée du vivant d’Arthur Adamov. Contrairement à Beckett ou Ionesco, Arthur Adamov est demeuré malgré tout méconnu, malgré par exemple l’admiration qu’il a suscitée auprès de personnes aussi peu recommandables que Roger Planchon, Jean Vilar, Laurent Terzieff, Bernard Dort, Michel Bataillon, Marthe Robert, Roger Blin et… Gabriel Garran. Gabriel Garran qui se souvient des mots d’Adamov : « la scène se devait d’être le lieu imaginaire du rapport entre “le curable et l’incurable” ». Les Retrouvailles est un texte « à défricher », entre apparence réelle et onirisme étrange, entre monde visible et monde invisible. Un jeune étudiant en droit rate le train qui devait le ramener chez sa mère et sa fiancée et se voit accosté par « la plus heureuse des femmes » et la jeune Louise. Edgar se retrouve cloîtré entre ces deux femmes qui le harcèlent. “Solitude, cruauté, dérision, Adamov nous dit que l’inconscient de chacun est encore préhistorique. C’est ce que je ressens devant « Les Retrouvailles ».” dit le metteur en scène.
