« On ne pouvait qu’être frappé par la totale sincérité qui était la sienne. L’absence d’apprêt, l’étonnante façon qu’il avait de vous fixer, des grands yeux qui lui mangeaient le visage », dit Gabriel Garran d’Arthur Adamov. Le metteur en scène a choisi de placer au fronton de sa mise en scène la photographie du regard de celui qu’il a connu et aimé et qu’il est sans doute un des derniers à sauver des oubliettes iniques du théâtre. Force est de constater, à voir cette courte et déroutante pièce, que le propos d’Adamov a une portée existentielle et métaphysique qui en fait l’égal des deux autres auteurs auxquels l’histoire littéraire l’associe d’habitude. Comme le remarque Gabriel Garran, entre Beckett « nobélisé » et Ionesco « académisé », Adamov le « réprouvé » mériterait quelques lauriers posthumes ! A notre époque qui se vautre dans les délices voyeuristes de l’autofiction et des gargarismes de l’ego, l’enquête que mène Adamov sur les affres du moi et les tropes d’un langage peinant à dire les choses, est autrement plus ambitieuse et sacrément plus exigeante ! Ce pourquoi, sans doute, le texte des Retrouvailles déroute d’abord, dans la mesure où ses personnages apparaissent avant tout comme des figures susceptibles de multiples interprétations et projections.
Une mise en scène lumineuse au service d’un texte profond
L’intrigue est assez mince : Edgar, jeune étudiant en droit, rate le train qui doit le ramener chez sa mère et sa fiancée, aux griffes desquelles il semble heureux d’échapper. Accosté par deux amies (« la plus heureuse des femmes », couturière, et Louise, secrétaire), il se retrouve prisonnier de ces deux autres matrices aux appétits aussi dévorants que celles qu’il a quittées… Edgar peine à étudier et à réfléchir. Il se fait la cousette de l’aînée et l’amant de la cadette : entre machine à coudre et machine à écrire, le jeune homme est pris dans un mécanisme implacable où se débat sa liberté. On peut lire la pièce au degré de métaphore qu’on voudra : dénonciation de la castration du mariage, angoisse de la création empêchée par la vie matérielle, dénonciation des totalitarismes aux masques bienveillants, déboires de l’intersubjectivité et de la communication, etc. Le génie d’Adamov est justement de ne pas imposer de lecture toute faite et de laisser au spectateur le soin de son interprétation. La mise en scène de Gabriel Garran a l’intelligence de ménager cette liberté, en choisissant de ne servir que l’explicite du texte, poétisant son implicite plutôt que de l’appuyer lourdement. Servi par quatre comédiens aériens et subtils, l’ensemble compose un spectacle aussi inattendu que pénétrant, belle occasion de découverte, si ce n’est de retrouvailles !
