Oswald, rentré de Paris, retrouve la maison familiale isolée, sa mère et un
vieux mensonge circulant entre les générations et les membres de la parentèle
sans qu’un seul ait le courage de s’en affranchir pour faire le choix de la
liberté et du bonheur. Chacun doit affronter ses propres fantômes et composer
avec la duplicité, la trahison, l’incertitude anxiogène et les tromperies qui
bouillonnent derrière la façade compassée de la vie bourgeoise. Désireux de
« restituer à ce chef-d’?uvre trop souvent négligé en France ses lettres de
noblesse », Arnaud Denis a choisi de débarrasser la pièce des scories
scénographiques habituelles qui encombrent selon lui le théâtre du grand
Norvégien : « pesanteur, lenteur volontaire et souvent inutile, émotion
forcée ou factice, trouvailles cérébrales qui remettent en question la force de
l’auteur ». Pariant sur l’intemporalité d’un drame dont l’insolence est
utile à notre époque, la mise en scène tâche de ménager la curiosité et le
suspense de ce « thriller psychologique » troublant et effrayant.
