C’est en 2003, il y a bientôt 15 ans, que François-Xavier Roth, jeune chef en vue, se décida à compliquer et enrichir son destin musical en donnant naissance à son propre orchestre : Les Siècles. Une formation d’un type nouveau, inimitée, jouant sur instruments d’époque mais tout en abordant, à l’inverse des ensembles baroques, un très large répertoire, de la musique baroque au XXè siècle. Ce programme de musique française, construit autour des personnages mythologiques de « Daphnis et Chloé », illustre parfaitement cette démarche. Passant d’un monde instrumental à un autre, François-Xavier Roth dirige successivement la musique du Daphnis et Eglé, pastorale héroïque en un acte de Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764), jouée en 1753 à Fontainebleau pour divertir la cour de Louis XV au retour de ses parties de chasse, puis, enjambant plus d’un siècle et demi de l’histoire de la musique, la flamboyante et mystérieuse musique de Daphnis et Chloé de Ravel, partition majeure composée en 1912 pour les Ballets russes de Diaghilev. Une traversée fulgurante de la musique française.
