En cette période où la musique généralement s’abandonne aux flonflons, les musiciens de l’Orchestre de l’Opéra de Paris ont choisi une tout autre voie pour finir l’année, avec un programme magnifique et exigeant d’œuvres du xxe siècle. C’est en premier lieu l’occasion de rendre hommage au compositeur Eliott Carter, le « Boulez américain », qui a fêté ses cent ans le 11 décembre, à travers deux œuvres : Tempo e Tempi de 2000 sur des poèmes italiens, et Triple duo pour violon, violoncelle, flûte, clarinette, piano et percussions, véritable manifeste de son art polyrithmique. Autres merveilles sonores au programme : Quatrain II du Japonais Takemitsu (1930-1996), Cendres de la Finlandaise Kaija Saariaho (née en 1952) et le faussement brahmsien Trio pour cor, violon et piano du Hongrois Ligeti (1923-2006), qui était, comme Carter, un extraordinaire rythmicien.
