Il était une fois quelques jeunes gens amateurs de funk rock, convaincus que l’excellence musicale peut aller de paire avec une polissonnerie assumée. Une bonne décennie plus tard, les Teuhpu ont su faire de leur légèreté un style impétueux : gros riffs de cuivres, banjo qui frétille, poubelle-basse et soubassophone, quelques paroles savoureusement absurdes, le tout habillant des mélodies excitantes ou entêtantes, nourries de ska, de musique tzigane, de reggae, rock ou groove. En 2006, sur une initiative du cinéma le Palais à Créteil, les garçons redécouvrent Buster Keaton et mettent en musique «One Week, la Maison démontable», court-métrage culte du cinéma muet, puis l’an passé «Sherlock Junior».
Quand scénario et musique doivent s’accorder…
«Le plus compliqué aura été d’adapter notre façon de créer au découpage cinématographique. Il nous a fallu trouver des atmosphères communes, alors que chacun ne ressent pas forcément la même chose au visionnage d’une même scène. L’interprétation musicale des images est un vrai parti pris.». Mais leur musique, déjà pétrie d’ambiances, de saynètes et de sketchs, a su coller parfaitement à l’univers cascadeur et romanesque de Keaton. «Il nous ressemble, son cinéma remuant plein de rebondissements nous va bien.» Plages acoustiques, bruitages fanfarons ou ambiances saturées, les Teuhpu y baguenaudent avec précision, nous faisant oublier que la bande son n’est pas d’époque, laissant Buster Keaton donner le tempo. Les petits-fils de Buster lui rendent le meilleur des hommages : celui d’être aussi fripouilles et larrons par les notes que Keaton sur la toile.
