Suzanne de la Bondrée, une demi-mondaine à l’affût de toute fortune à croquer, rencontre Sir Gladiator, un riche Américain venu dilapider ses millions à Paris. Du Jardin des Plantes au Théâtre du Châtelet, une course éperdue à l’argent s’engage. Une course qui passe par l’amour et qui emporte dans son sillage toute une société de personnages extravagants, voire clownesques. Car Eugène Labiche a créé un « ouragan de démence », une suite de péripéties totalement déjantées frôlant à bien des moments l’absurde. N’a-t-il d’ailleurs pas écrit : « Une pièce est une bête à mille pattes qui doit toujours être en route. Si elle ralentit, le public bâille ; si elle s’arrête, il siffle. » Sur une musique originale d’Alain Jacquon, dirigeant des comédiens du Studio Théâtre d’Asnières, Hervé Van der Meulen s’empare des Trente millions de Gladiator avec « une gourmandise pantagruélique ».
