Dans Les Trois sœurs version Androïde, un chercheur en robotique remplace la benjamine de ses filles, qui vient de disparaître, par un androïde à son image. Dans Sayonara ver.2, des parents engagent un être artificiel pour s’occuper de leur fille souffrant d’une maladie incurable. « Dans 20 ans, il sera normal de voir des robots sur scène, déclare Oriza Hirata. Aujourd’hui, s’il faut trouver un sens à cette utilisation, c’est parce que personne dans le monde entier ne l’a fait jusqu’à présent. C’est la seule raison pour laquelle j’utilise des robots sur scène. » A travers cette présence inhabituelle, les deux créations de l’auteur et metteur en scène japonais posent la question de la valeur de l’humain, de la vie, des particularités qui différencient la performance d’un comédien de celle d’un androïde.
