Sur scène, Jane Austen, 1808, ou Rebecca, 2008. L’intranquillité de deux femmes qui cherchent à se réaliser, à s’épanouir profondément sans que cela ne soit un simple conformisme aux codes sociaux et aux attendus. Rebecca, restauratrice de tableaux, découvre derrière un portrait miniature de Tom Lefroy, une lettre passionnée signée J. A. Elle enquête, découvre un pan de vie de l’immense romancière qui la subjugue. Tom fut l’unique amour de Jane, et lorsque leurs brefs moments de bonheur partagé ont brusquement cessé, elle a sublimé la désillusion et s’est consacrée à la création littéraire. Ses héros masculins ont même été, dit-elle, « forgés à son image ». La mise en scène passe de l’une à l’autre avec finesse, de façon fluide et sobre, laissant le spectateur apprécier les échos entre l’une et l’autre histoire (écho cependant un peu trop appuyé et flagrant à la fin de l’histoire), laissant le spectateur aussi apprécier la remarquable force de caractère de Jane et saisir la mesure de son génie féminin.
Passionnée et entière
D’une part, l’atelier de Rebecca et ses accessoires d’artiste (en devenir), d’autre part le guéridon de Jane, ses livres et sa plume. Une plume dont elle se saisit avec une évidente satisfaction, une plume qui fait entendre avec jubilation son écriture extraordinairement lucide et sincère, son humour mordant, son ironie, sa volonté infaillible d’écrire. Quelques brefs extraits de romans ainsi que ses lettres sont cités. C’est bien sûr grâce à l’interprétation très juste des comédiennes que la pièce convainc. Céline Devalan est une Jane Austen volontaire, passionnée et entière, qui se réalise par l’écriture plutôt que par l’amour, dessinant un portrait social de son époque et des portraits psychologiques de ses personnages d’une extraordinaire et délicieuse acuité ! Elodie Sörensen est une Rebecca très attachante, en quête d’elle-même et hésitante, n’osant encore affirmer ses choix profonds. Ainsi les rapports entre la vie et l’œuvre se teintent ici de courage. Courage et audace de choisir au dix-neuvième siècle l’art plutôt que la vie conjugale. Raisons et sentiments fut sobrement signée « by a lady » à sa publication en 1811… Et finalement, les femmes doivent aujourd’hui encore se battre pour concrétiser leurs aspirations. La pièce esquisse une suite : il ne nous reste plus qu’à relire avec un exquis plaisir ses romans…
