Il y a Rhoda, Jinny, Suzanne, Neville, Bernard et Louis. De l’enfance à la vieillesse, ces six personnages, ou plutôt ces six figures, parlent. Sans jamais s’adresser la parole. A travers des soliloques intérieurs. En dialoguant de conscience en conscience, dans une sorte d’adresse muette qui participe à ce que Marie-Christine Soma envisage comme « un théâtre silencieux et pourtant peuplé de mots ». « L’écriture de Virginia Woolf est une écriture de la sensation, des affects, des perceptions, explique la metteure en scène, une écriture qui rend compte de la simultanéité et de la conjonction de tout ce qui nous traverse à chaque instant, tout ce qui entre dans notre champ de vision, atteint notre oreille, nous fait frissonner : de la pensée la plus haute et la plus abstraite, à la remarque la plus triviale, la plus banale ». Creusant le rapport de l’individu au multiple, au paradoxal et au contradictoire, Marie-Christine Soma place la thématique du temps au cœur des Vagues et construit une utopie théâtrale au sein de laquelle chaque figure est successivement incarnée par deux comédiens de générations différentes. Anne Baudoux, Valentine Carette, Frédérique Duchêne, Marion Barché, Jany Gastaldi, Laure Gunther, Jean-Damien Barbin, François Clavier, Jean-Charles Clichet, Jean-Paul Delore, Antoine Kahan et Alexandre Pallu interrogeront ainsi le champ temporel sur lequel ces six figures« se développent, s’entrechoquent au gré de la contingence de leurs existences ».
