Oleg Kulik s’est récemment trouvé sous les feux de l’actualité. Lors de la dernière édition de la F.I.A.C. de Paris, ses œuvres, exposées par une galerie moscovite, ont été décrochées par les services de police. Motif : les photographies montraient Kulik lui-même dans des positions zoophiles. L’une des grandes problématiques de l’artiste russe concerne en effet le lien entre l’animal et l’homme, ce qu’il appelle la « zoophrénie ». Nous avions vu à la Foire de Bâle l’une de ses vidéos, où il jouait le rôle d’un chien attaquant des policiers… Né en 1961 à Kiev, Oleg Kulik se détourne aujourd’hui de cette démarche, pour interroger la notion de « sacré ». C’est ainsi qu’il mettra en scène, en cette fin du mois de janvier, l’un des chefs d’œuvre de la musique religieuse : Les Vêpres de la Vierge de Monteverdi.
« Conception visuelle »
N’imaginez évidemment pas une mise en scène traditionnelle ! Oleg Kulik crée une véritable performance, développant une « conception visuelle » de l’œuvre, avec des projections et des jeux de lumière. Le choix des Vêpres de la Vierge ne tient pas au hasard. Cette partition, publiée à Venise en 1610, marque un véritable tournant dans la déclinaison musicale des textes sacrés. Auparavant, le style qui prédominait, nommé « stile antico », se définissait par sa sobriété, voire son austérité. Avec Les Vêpres, place à une musique colorée, vivante, très proche de l’univers de l’opéra – Monteverdi est l’un des pionniers du genre avec son Orfeo (1607). Rien d’étonnant à ce que cette œuvre soit donc donnée dans un théâtre, celui du Châtelet en l’occurrence. Une sonorisation est toutefois annoncée, pour recréer les résonances d’une acoustique d’église. Dans la fosse, on retrouve les musiciens de l’Ensemble Matheus, dirigé par Jean-Christophe Spinosi. Quant à la distribution, elle réunit notamment la remarquable soprano Sylvia Schwartz (que l’on a pu entendre au Châtelet en novembre dernier dans le ridicule opéra rock Welcome to the Voice, avec Sting) et la voix de basse stylée de Nicolas Testé.
