Comment avez-vous été amenée à travailler avec la compagnie du Théâtre des Lucioles ?
Leslie Kaplan : J’ai rencontré les Lucioles alors qu’ils étaient encore élèves au Théâtre national de Bretagne, au moment où ils fondaient leur collectif. C’est Claude Régy – qui avait mis en scène l’un de mes textes (Le Criminel) au Théâtre de la Bastille, en 1988 – qui leur a conseillé de prendre contact avec moi dans le cadre d’un projet d’atelier qu’ils souhaitaient organiser à la Centrale de Rennes. Les Lucioles ont ainsi monté mon texte L’Excès-L’Usine avec des femmes détenues. C’était en 1994. Après cela, nous avons continué de nous voir, de travailler ensemble. Je peux d’ailleurs dire que c’est la fréquentation des Lucioles qui m’a appris ce que c’est que d’écrire pour le théâtre.
Quelles nouvelles zones d’écriture le théâtre vous a-t-il permis d’explorer ?
L. K. : J’ai toujours été très intéressée par les dialogues. Comme toute bonne Américaine (ndlr, Leslie Kaplan est née à New York, en 1943), j’ai beaucoup lu F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway… Dans mes romans, j’accorde une assez large part aux dialogues, mais je crois que le théâtre m’a vraiment fait réaliser l’importance du dialogue dans le langage. Qu’est-ce que parler, comment peut-on parler à quelqu’un ? Le théâtre permet d’aborder ces questions de manière frontale. D’une certaine façon, il me semble que le théâtre est l’un des lieux où l’on peut parler à la fois de la façon la plus abstraite et la plus concrète, la plus pulsionnelle qui soit. On peut vraiment se tuer pour une idée au théâtre.

Est-ce à dire que votre relation aux mots est différente lorsque vous écrivez pour la scène et lorsque vous écrivez un roman ?
L. K. : C’est difficile à expliquer, mais je crois que oui. Si on parvient à maintenir le dialogue en tension, le « mot comme question » ressort de manière particulière au théâtre. Les mots impliquent en effet des échos, des engagements différents chez le spectateur et chez le lecteur. Le lecteur peut poser son livre, revenir en arrière, sauter des pages… Il détermine lui-même son rythme de lecture et donc son rapport au texte. Au théâtre, la relation au mot est vraiment différente : elle est généralement plus violente que dans un roman, plus organique, plus physique dans son intensité.
Le langage est d’ailleurs l’un des thèmes centraux de Louise, elle est folle…
L. K. : Oui, après Toute ma vie j’ai été une femme, j’ai voulu continuer d’explorer ce que signifie être une femme ici et maintenant, une femme en proie aux mots, au langage aussi bien qu’à la société d’aujourd’hui, avec tout ce que celle-ci peut comporter de poids, d’inertie, de folie. Le thème de la folie occupe d’ailleurs une place importante dans ce texte. Est-ce Louise qui est folle ? Ou les autres protagonistes ? Ou la société elle-même ? Nos dérives, mais aussi notre créativité, passe par des formes de décalage, d’écart, de marge, de transgression. Je tente de saisir comment la folie recoupe des données de notre monde commun comme la consommation, le spectacle, l’identité, l’étranger…
Tout cela est mis en perspective par les mots…
L. K. : Par les mots, par le langage, par la pensée. Une des questions qui revient dans Louise, elle est folle est de savoir comment parler en dehors des clichés, des mots définitifs et consensuels, comment attraper notre monde dans toutes ses dimensions, dans toutes ses directions, guidés que nous sommes par ce qui est dit, et par ce qui n’est pas dit mais qui existe à l’état latent.
