Pour la réouverture de l’Opéra Comique – devenu Théâtre national – son nouveau directeur Jérôme Deschamps a choisi un ouvrage emblématique de la Salle Favart. Il n’y fut certes pas créé, mais fut créé non loin de là, aux Bouffes-Parisiens, en 1877. L’Étoile, opéra-bouffe en trois actes d’Emmanuel Chabrier, qui raconte les caprices, souvent sanglants, du roi Ouf Ier, est une œuvre des plus délirantes, toujours empreinte de joie, le plus souvent insaisissable. C’est d’ailleurs ce qui a guidé pour leur mise en scène Jérôme Deschamps et Macha Makeïeff (qui signe également les décors et costumes). La direction musicale est confiée à John Eliot Gardiner, qui remit l’ouvrage à l’affiche alors qu’il dirigeait l’Opéra de Lyon. Avec son Orchestre révolutionnaire et romantique, il accompagne une distribution toute française avec Jean-Luc Viala dans le rôle du roi, Jean-Philippe Lafont dans celui de son astronome Siroco et Stéphanie d’Oustrac en belle Lazuli.
