Le premier roman d’Albert Camus, L’Étranger, a emporté tous les cœurs d’emblée en faisant le récit de cet homme un peu absent à lui-même qui, parti en congé de deuil maternel sur les lieux de son enfance, se retrouve sur place accusé de meurtre. Pierrette Dupoyet, fervente admiratrice des classiques de la littérature, estime que le héros de Camus, Meursault, ne triche pas avec la vérité. C’est un assassin certes, mais qui n’a pas été guidé par un instinct meurtrier ; il aurait été aveuglé plutôt, comme envoûté et dérouté par la présence lancinante et obsédante du soleil, le sentiment d’abandon et la cruauté de la vie. Ce qui est dénoncé, c’est l’engrenage d’une justice subjective qui cherche à démontrer l’insensibilité et la culpabilité d’un accusé. Et comme Meursault n’a pas pleuré le jour de l’enterrement de sa mère, il devient suspect. La verve et la présence scéniques de l’actrice accordent tous leurs pouvoirs d’évocation à cette œuvre clé qui n’en finit pas de subjuguer le public.
