António Lobo Antunes n’avait que 28 ans lorsqu’il dut partir servir son pays dans la guerre coloniale qui opposait le Portugal aux indépendantistes angolais. Durant les deux années qu’il passa en Afrique (de 1971 à 1973), le jeune diplômé en médecine qu’il était alors écrivit de nombreuses lettres à son épouse, sans penser qu’elles seraient un jour publiées. C’est cette correspondance privée que l’on découvre dans Lettres de la guerre. Une correspondance qui se présente à la fois comme le journal d’un médecin hanté par le désir de construire une œuvre littéraire et comme un témoignage sur le quotidien d’une guerre qui marqua à vie António Lobo Antunes. Dans le cadre de la mise à l’honneur de l’écrivain portugais organisée, cette saison, par la MC93, Lazare Boghossian et Aurélia Petit portent à la scène ces lettres composées de paysages africains, de portraits de militaires et d’autochtones, de poèmes et de confidences passionnées à travers lesquels l’auteur met son cœur à nu…
