L’homme éprouve sa langue originelle comme unique tandis qu’il la voit se pluraliser dans la vie sociale ouverte aux diversités. Cette dialectique répond à une volonté de contourner l’enfermement individuel -ou étatique- pour le faire éclater. Saura-t-on faire l’Europe administrativement, politiquement et culturellement au-delà de la tradition commerciale britannique et la suprématie de la langue anglaise de négoce ? Un casse-tête chinois pour Norma Gette dans L’Européenne, sous-déléguée à la Direction générale des Affaires culturelles de la Commission européenne, qui affronte les interprètes professionnels. Pour cette « année du dialogue » – il faut comprendre didactiquement « échange », « partage » et « réciprocité » -, l’eurocrate distinguée accueille en « résidence » un poète francophone, un compositeur français, une installatrice allemande, un performer portugais, une chanteuse italienne et un orchestre. Un joli coup de pied donné par David Lescot dans la fourmilière des stratégies culturelles « innovantes ». Commandes ont été passées aux artistes « créateurs » : une épopée, un hymne, une installation et une performance pour célébrer l’Europe institutionnalisée. Mais comment réduire le nombre de bulletins des eurosceptiques ?
Est-il possible de parler plus fort que la mémoire ?
Les scrutins démocratiques des Etats respectifs ne font qu’emballer la machine bureaucratique de la Communauté qui malmène le principe de proportionnalité et d’équité. Une linguiste belge – la gouaille d’Elizabeth Mazev tombe à point – s’acharne à construire l’entité européenne malgré les obstacles : « Aujourd’hui, l’Union compte vingt-sept membres et vingt-trois langues officielles, ce qui porte le nombre de combinaisons linguistiques à cinq cent six. » Il faut savoir compter avec l’Estonien qui traduit le grec et le Maltais le tchèque. Certes, l’Europe n’est pas concernée par les trois mille langues en usage dans le monde parlées par quelques dizaines à plus de cinq cents millions de personnes. Que dire des idiomes en voie d’extinction, des dialectes en cours comme le « sicilien », des patois, du sort des langues minoritaires du Sud ? Que reste-t-il de la vieille Europe ? Des rapports de force économiques et linguistiques. Un théâtre nu de tréteaux et d’ombres, une figure chenue qu’une jeune Slovaque tente de ranimer. La moribonde se souvient de l’Histoire et de l’extermination des juifs. Est-il possible de parler plus fort que la mémoire ? Sur le plateau, les comédiens parfois égarés mais décidés à en découdre déploient dans l’humour une verve rageuse et un joyeux chaos scénique. Au-delà de l’intercompréhension passive, le citoyen européen ne voit en effet qu’une seule issue, aller dans la langue de l’autre.
