Brecht l’appelait « le grand éducateur de l’Europe moderne » et Freud salua son audace, mais Wedekind subit pendant longtemps la sévérité de la censure, au point que L’Eveil du printemps ne fut monté en intégralité qu’en 1928, près de dix ans après la mort de son auteur. Masturbation, sadisme, amour du fouet, viol : la pièce passe en revue fantasmes et tabous et choisit une forme foisonnante et audacieuse pour exposer « la découverte sauvage de l’amour, l’envie frénétique de grandir et le vertige de la mort » qu’Armel Roussel considère comme son cœur ardent. Onze comédiens et trois musiciennes-chanteuses impriment un rythme endiablé à ce texte sans concession dont la crudité est infiniment moins indécente que celle des tartufes et des hypocrites aristarques… Contre ceux qui se pincent le nez, qu’Armel Roussel choisit de nous rappeler « ce que c’est que respirer » !
