Grand admirateur de Molière, Mikhail Boulgakov a écrit une biographie du dramaturge ainsi qu’une pièce, La Cabale des dévots (1929). Trois ans plus tard, une nouvelle traduction du Bourgeois gentilhomme lui est commandée, qui, en fin de compte, se concrétise en un nouveau texte au rythme trépidant, qui « justifie tout autrement la portée du geste de Jourdain et redistribue les rôles de chacun selon une appréciation bien différente. » Continuellement censuré, peu enclin à s’émerveiller devant une Révolution susceptible d’engendrer « un programme d’abâtardissement et d’uniformisation de l’humanité », Boulgakov est conscient de la perversion d’une société qui soumet l’art à des directives aussi rigides qu’absurdes. Dans un tel contexte, la volonté de Jourdain d’élever son esprit et d’apprendre les bonnes manières ne prête pas seulement à rire, elle se teinte d’une tonalité tragique qui déplore l’impossibilité de se renouveler en toute dignité. « Dans ce monde catastrophé, la question que Boulgakov pose est d’abord celle de la survivance de la qualité humaine. Jourdain est en quête d’un autre état de lui-même. » souligne le metteur en scène Grégoire Ingold. L’intrigue débute dans un théâtre. Alors que les comédiens s’apprêtent à rentrer chez eux, ils reçoivent l’ordre de créer pour le lendemain une pièce pour le Palais. Une folle nuit de travail s’ensuit pour les dix comédiens… Beau programme, qui célèbre le théâtre avec éclat.
