C’est « la beauté dérisoire de la situation » qui lui sert de cadre qui a retenu Laurent Terzieff dans le choix de mettre en scène et de jouer L’Habilleur. En 1941, alors que l’Angleterre est pilonnée par les bombes de la Luftwaffe, le chef d’une troupe de théâtre sillonnant le pays pour y jouer Le Roi Lear entre en scène en provoquant les avions : « Bombardez ! Mais sachez que chacune de mes répliques sera un bouclier contre votre barbarie. » Ronald Harwood s’est inspiré de Sir Donald Wolfit, acteur et chef de troupe shakespearien qui jouait d’un bout à l’autre du pays et dont l’avarice était aussi légendaire que sa pugnacité prosélyte : « par-dessus tout, Wolfit croyait au théâtre et à la grande capacité du théâtre à enrichir la vie des gens qui se déplaçaient en masse pour le voir » dit de lui Ronald Harwood qui travailla à ses côtés pendant sept ans. Le personnage de L’Habilleur n’est pas seulement et pas tout à fait Wolfit. Il est plutôt la synthèse de tous ces hommes de troupes qui, de l’Illustre Théâtre jusqu’au années 30, en Angleterre comme partout en Europe, battirent la campagne pour y dresser chapiteaux et tréteaux. Mais Laurent Terzieff avoue avoir choisi L’Habilleur non pas tant pour l’hommage que la pièce rend à un art que lui-même sert depuis tant d’années que pour le double portrait complexe qu’il fait de l’acteur et de son habilleur, le second étant le miroir du premier, « un miroir amoureux des choses de la scène » auxquelles il voue un culte exclusif. Plutôt que de seulement dévoiler l’envers du décor, il s’agit donc ici de percer à jour le mystère de la fascination.
