Cinq ans après la sortie du livre à grand succès de Jean de Brunhoff contant en textes et en images l’épopée du petit éléphant Babar fuyant la forêt africaine pour plonger dans le monde de la ville, Poulenc cédait avec bonheur à la demande de ses jeunes neveux trépignants, qui souhaitaient qu’il en fasse une adaptation musicale. Ce fut chose faite en 1936 dans cette partition écrite d’abord pour piano, puis joliment orchestrée par Jean Françaix, qui, tout en laissant beaucoup de place à l’imagination de l’auditeur, illustre divers épisodes de l’histoire : la berceuse, les jeux sur la plage, la mort de la maman de Babar, la fuite et l’arrivée au pays des hommes… Au 104, où l’Orchestre de chambre de Paris est en résidence, l’œuvre sera précédée par de courts extraits (Pizzicato polka de Strauss, Danse russe de Tchaïkovski, Petite symphonie de Gounod, Petite fanfare de Bernard Calmel), qui mettent en valeur les instruments ou sections d’instruments (cordes, percussions, cuivres, etc) à l’honneur dans la page pachydermique de Poulenc, qui conclura ce bref concert de moins d’une heure.
