« Je suis suspendu entre deux mondes. » Ainsi se définit Iouri Olecha, né en Russie à la charnière de deux siècles, en 1899, et devenu adulte au cœur de la transition entre deux systèmes économiques, politiques et sociaux, transition marquée par la fameuse Révolution préfigurant l’avènement programmé de l’homme nouveau et… le naufrage des idéaux communistes tragiquement pervertis. Ce conflit entre deux époques structure le roman qui l’a rendu célèbre, L’Envie, publié en 1927, (avant la disgrâce et la déchéance dans les années trente), et traverse aussi de bout en bout la pièce tirée du roman, L’Homme inutile ou la Conspiration des sentiments. S’y opposent deux frères. Andreï Babitchev (Pascal Bongard), entrepreneur du nouveau monde, bâtisseur communiste, fabrique des saucisses à grande échelle et libère ainsi les ménagères grâce à la glorieuse avancée du progrès. Ivan Babitchev (John Arnold), chantre de l’ancien monde, « paladin du siècle qui expire », roi des oreillers, complote sa vengeance et rêve de réhabiliter les sentiments anciens. Nicolas Kavalerov (Vincent Minne) a l’âge du siècle, 28 ans ; velléitaire et alcoolique, figure prémonitoire et autobiographique de l’auteur, il tergiverse et clame son amour pour Valia (Sabrina Kouroughli), fille adoptive d’Andreï.
Opposition ressassée
Après Le Mendiant ou la mort de Zand, créé en 2007, salué par la critique et le public, Bernard Sobel revient à Olecha. Mais malgré le talent des acteurs (Pascal Bongard et John Arnold sont excellents), la mise en scène semble avant tout s’enliser dans cette opposition ressassée, et finalement le texte prolixe emprisonne les personnages dans le flux des mots sans vraiment ouvrir de perspectives. Ce conflit marqué par des dichotomies nettes – la masse contre l’individu, le matérialisme tourné vers le futur contre l’idéalisme tourné vers le passé, l’utilité contre l’inutilité, etc – indique les difficultés d’échapper à diverses formes d’aliénation, face à l’Histoire qui s’emballe, mais ici les mots et les relations ont tendance à trop d’explicite. Finalement cette formulation ne résonne guère avec notre époque, adepte de la confusion des genres, sans horizon utopiste, où seule une évidence surclasse tout le reste : l’omnipotence de la consommation. Manque aussi peut-être à cette pièce une dimension burlesque ou fantastique, qui aurait pimenté ce choc des mondes. La scénographie pertinente figure une ville labyrinthique et déshumanisée, onirique et expressionniste, où l’homme peine à s’adapter – Olecha a fait de cette inadaptation un sujet central dans sa vie et ses textes, un sujet fascinant et tragique…
