L’Homme-Jasmin retranscrit les « Impressions d’une malade mentale », comme indiqué dans le sous-titre de l’œuvre. De fait, Unica Zürn écrit sur ses différents internements en service psychiatrique. Cependant ce récit à la troisième personne n’est pas centré sur la thématique de la folie. L’auteure expose plus largement sa vie de femme et d’artiste. Ainsi, pour sa traductrice et amie Ruth Henry, L’Homme-Jasmin décrit d’abord « le récit des stigmates de la création ». La metteure en scène Magali Montoya a voulu détacher Unica Zürn de son image de « folle » pour rendre hommage à la personnalité complexe de l’écrivaine et dessinatrice. Pour cela, le texte a été réparti entre cinq actrices, dont Anne Alvaro, qui s’approprient chacune un versant de cette parole féminine sur une scène recouverte de gros sel. L’Homme-Jasmin montre que nous ne sommes pas constitués d’un seul bloc mais qu’une multitude de voix peuvent s’élever en nous, ce qui peut mener à la folie comme à la création.
