« Je représente l’humanité telle que ses maîtres l’ont faite. L’homme est un mutilé. Ce qu’on m’a fait, on l’a fait au genre humain. On lui a déformé le droit, la justice, la vérité, la raison, l’intelligence, comme à moi les yeux, les narines et les oreilles ; comme à moi, on lui a mis au cœur un cloaque de colère et de douleur, et sur la face un masque de contentement. » Ainsi parle Gwymplaine, le malheureux au sourire figé dont Victor Hugo raconte l’épopée fabuleuse et cruelle dans L’Homme qui rit. Elevé par un loup et un bateleur philosophe, aimé d’une jeune aveugle et désiré par une aristocrate cherchant à tromper son ennui dans ses bras de monstre, se découvrant pair d’Angleterre, tonnant en vain contre la misère et retrouvant trop tard l’amour trop pur de ses compagnons d’infortune, Gwymplaine est le symbole d’une humanité mutilée et calamiteuse. Il tend aux puissants sardoniques le miroir de sa propre face derrière laquelle se cache cette âme haute et pure que seule Déa, la jeune aveugle, parvient à voir. Homme de théâtre et donc de révélation, Gwymplaine ne parvient à convaincre ni le peuple soumis ni les aristocrates impudents de l’injustice des maux qui défigurent la société.
Le pari du collectif
La troupe du Centre dramatique de La Courneuve trouve en cette pièce bien des échos au projet qu’elle mène depuis tant d’années de construire un théâtre populaire de qualité, installé dans une zone où les puissants rechignent trop souvent à venir, sauf peut-être pour se faire peur comme les nobles visitant les bas-fonds de Londres dans L’Homme qui rit. Les comédiens de cette troupe obstinée qui continue de faire le pari du collectif et de la communauté, ont invité cette année Marion Lécrivain pour mettre en scène leur nouvelle création. « Aucun décor, aucun costume particulier pour symboliser une époque particulière » dit la jeune femme qui a choisi d’interroger l’actualité de ce personnage tragique. « Aujourd’hui, qui est Gwynplaine ? » demande Marion Lécrivain. Où se dresse en effet l’homme qui fait scandale chez les puissants pour dénoncer la misère ricanante, dans quelle baraque foraine, dans quelle zone se terrent ceux qui craignent que les hommes soient devenus plus féroces que des loups, sur quel frêle esquif naviguent les justes dans la mer déchaînée des compromissions ? Peut-être que La Courneuve mérite le détour pour rappeler l’urgence de ces questions et commencer enfin d’y répondre…
